UPS batteries

UPS (uninterruptible power supply) or battery backup systems are called upon to provide backup power in case of an emergency power loss. They are responsible for keeping large operations (laboratories, industrial complexes, factories, data centers, etc.) running smoothly and without a hiccup. With a long established track record, lead-acid batteries thrive in applications, such as UPS, where reliability is paramount.

UPS batteries are typically stored away from other equipment in their own battery rooms. The amount of batteries required will depend on the power needs of the building and of the overall system. Typically it is not uncommon to find several dozen batteries connected in series or in parallel. Batteries must be maintained by qualified professionals who understand how these systems operate. It is recommended to swap out batteries every 3-5 years.

The most common types of batteries include:

VRLA (AGM and Gel Cell) batteries are the most utilized lead-acid batteries in backup systems since the mid 1970's. They can be designed to fit a wide range of power needs, and their lower discharge rates means that they will not lose as much capacity when the system is not in use.

In cases of VRLA battery use, cabinet units typically house rows of batteries stacked both vertically and horizontally. Wet Cell batteries providing backup power must be arranged more carefully, in rooms designed with proper ventilation, and must be handled with care. While both VRLA and Wet Cell batteries require maintenance, VRLA batteries typically require much less than their counterparts. Thermal runaway is the most common issue in situations where VRLA batteries are not properly monitored.

  • Provide backup power in situations of power loss
  • Run in series of dozens or more batteries, in accordance to power needs of the system
  • Can be Wet Cell or VRLA. There are advantages to both types
  • Are supplied energy by power systems under normal operations to prevent self-discharge
  • Require periodic maintenance by qualified technicians
  • Must be replaced every 3-5 years
  • Can be scrapped for money when batteries go bad
